Altmeisterzeichnungen des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts, fragil, lichtempfindlich und kostbar, stehen im Zentrum des Ausstellungskatalogs der Graphischen Sammlung der ETH Zurich. Die Zeichnungen spiegeln das Besondere, das Aussergewohnliche einer Privatsammlung, die noch nie der Offentlichkeit prasentiert wurde und bisher nur einem kleinen Kreis von Fachleuten und Freunden bekannt war. Ihre heutige Zusammenstellung verdanken sie dem feinen Geschmack und Kennerauge, aber auch der Leidenschaft ihres Sammlers. Neben klingenden Namen wie Giulio Romano, Luca Cambiaso, Annibale Carracci, Giambattista Tiepolo und Francesco Guardi finden sich in der Kollektion zahlreiche weniger bekannte aber nicht minder eindrucksvolle Werke. Ihren Reiz verdanken sie in erster Linie dem spontanen, lebendigen Ausdruck, einer ersten, inspirierenden Idee eines Kunstlers oder erweisen sich bei naherer Betrachtung als bereits gereifte kunstlerische Losung, die als Vorstufe fur ein Gemalde dienen konnte. Sie bieten die seltene Moglichkeit, den kunstlerischen Schaffensprozess unmittelbar, dem Kunstler gleichsam uber die Schulter blickend, zu verfolgen. Im Unterschied zu manchen Kunstlersammlungen, die nicht zuletzt im Hinblick auf das eigene Studium angelegt worden waren, begann sich der Sammlungszweck mit dem sich erweiternden Kreis von Kunstliebhabern und Kennern im 17. und vor allem im 18. Jahrhundert zu wandeln. Ihr asthetisches Gespur und Interesse fur Zeichnungen in allen ihren Auspragungen wurde zum wesentlichen Antrieb ihrer Tatigkeit. Das aufkommende kennerschaftliche Kunsturteil und das Bewusstsein fur die asthetischen Qualitaten eines Kunstwerks bewirkten auf dem Gebiet der Handzeichnung eine vermehrte Wertschatzung des Einzelblatts. Seine Qualitaten forderten die Kenner heraus und ihre Neugier war nicht eher gestillt, als bis die historische Stellung einer Zeichnung erkannt, die chronologische Einordnung und die regionale Schulzugehorigkeit bestimmt oder gar die prazise Zuschreibung an eine bestimmte Kunstlerpersonlichkeit gelungen war. Kunst und Kennerschaft wurden auf diese Weise zum unzertrennlichen Gespann und bewiesen auch in jungerer Zeit beim Aufbau der Sammlung Gadola erneut ihre fruchtbare Wechselwirkung. Die in ihrer Eigenart und konsequenten Auspragung einzigartige junge Sammlung erhalt mit der Publikation nun ihre verdiente Anerkennung.
