Publisher's Synopsis

Guido Baselgia, born and brought up in the Engadine, is regarded as one of the leading photographers in Switzerland today. He established his reputation above all with his photographic forays into Eastern Europe. More recently he has produced photo essays containing a memorable series of images extending over a number of years, documenting the work of the artists Tadashi Kawamata and Richard Tuttle for the Kunsthaus Zug. Since 1998 Baselgia has been occupied with a large-scale project on the landscape and life in the Engadine. The resulting images (Baryt prints) are both fascinating and unsettling - portraying the apparently familiar landscape of the Engadine in a strikingly unfamiliar manner. With this work Baselgia has added a highly topical, innovative dimension to the long tradition of painting and photography devoted to this famous valley high up in the mountains. This publication presents images of Guido Baselgia's individualistic, utterly original exploration of the margins of nature and culture in the Engadine.
