Publisher's Synopsis

Subtitled `An example for the reconstruction of Lat Quaternary environmental changes and past human impact from the northeastern part of the Carpathian Basin', this volume reports on a multi-disciplinary project investigatinf the palaeoecology and geoarchaeology of the sedimentary sequences of the Bátorliget marshy natural reserve in the northeastern region of the Great Hungarian Plain. The study's aims, to investigate the long-term relationship between man and the environment and to reconstruct environmental conditions from the Holocene to the medieval period, are discussed ahead of methodological considerations and presentation of the results of a series of analyses. The latter include analyses of geomorphology, lithology, radiocarbon dating, isotope geochemistry, mineralogy, pollen and charcoal, wood, seeds and fruits, molluscan remains and vertebrate fossil remains. A summary model for palaeoenvironmental change from the Neolithic to the medieval period rounds off the volume and this will undoubtedly have important implications for our understanding of the palaeoenvironment in this and neighbouring regions. All reports in English.
