Publisher's Synopsis
This is the story of a young girl growing up during the Great Depression - a time when a generation of Americans lived in poverty, and suffered frequent tragedy and loss. Children died from epidemics of diseases that we seldom see today. Many adults young and old died from the ravages of TB, leaving their children alone and destitute. These were truly hard times, and yet, those who survived, clung together and endured. They learned to overcome hardships and to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. They taught the next generation to value friendships and the strength of family ties. It is a story based on the childhood of Jean Berthiaume, who was born and raised in Fall River, Massachussetts. This is the story of my mother. It is written for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and anyone else who cherishes lessons handed down from one generation to the next.
