June Allen is an adventurer. She knows the kinds of animals that live on her mountain, and she knows the big bear she and Jack just encountered was different. Very different. In 1909 California, grizzly bears are a thing of the past. Only the old-timers have ever seen one, and no one misses the terrible, frightening beasts. June's parents don't believe she saw one, and don't even want her to mention the word grizzly. Though June doesn't tell a soul, rumors spread, attracting bear-hunters, trappers and fortune seekers, making their ridge a very dangerous place for bears and people alike. Someone is sure to find and kill June's grizzly. She and her parents come up with a plan to save the bear, a plan that will take them on an adventure the likes June has only read about in books.
