Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Gringoire, And, L'ete De La Saint-Martin

Somewhat more serious is the treatment of King Louis. History shows him, indeed, as a many-sided character, but none of the sides are sympathetic. His nature is full of contradictions, but they are the inconsistencies of vice, not the contrasts of vices and virtues. He had a certain grim, sardonic humor, but there is nothing in his life to indicate that he would have deviated into the kindliness of this play, though even here history casts an April shadow over the idyl, and the claws show now and then beneath the velvet paw.
