An account of the Great Western Railway locomotive development, from Daniel Gooch's 8 foot 4-2-2 locomotives of the 1840s on to the turn of the century and the great G.J. Churcward's remarkable innovations. The book describes how provided for modern, powerful, and highly efficient standard locomotives, and were to influence developments at Swindon until the 1920s and 1930s. Changing traffic conditions in the 1920's led to the development of the famous "Castles" and "Kings" by Churchward's successor, C.B. Collet. Both during and after World War II, Swindon men contributed massively to the development and testing of steam locomotives in widely varied conditions.
