It will be said at once that hitherto Catholics, at least in these countries, through the lack of University training, and therefore through the absence of that fine sense of appreciation for whatever is valuable or attractive in the persona lities of their great co-religionists', have been con spicuously indifferent about the lives or thoughts, or works of those, who clinging fast to the tenets of their faith, have wrought great deeds either through the emancipation of oppressed creeds or nationalities, or through important additions to literature, or through discoveries in science made in the seclusion of their studies or labo ratories. And from this indifference there sprang a natural, yet quite erroneous inference, that outside the domain of theology and philosophy the Catholic Church had little to show in the industry or intelligence of her children.
