Tayna Bedford at 15 years of age has a list of prospective pen friends and is disappointed when her mother, Suzzie, tries to discourage the enterprise, remonstrating that Suzzie used to have several pen friends herself. Suzzie relents as she recalls the old friendships, (that are now far more than friends) and the tales of her four friends and herself are seen in mixed flashbacks, how four lives from Europe, the United States and Australia intertwined with Suzzie's as WW11 raged and ended. All five are interlinked in differing ways, and four find themselves meeting at Suzzie's farm home at the end of the war. Tanya's letters begin to be answered, with some surprises .....
