In another part of the world lives Meg, whose devoted son Jack has been tricked into joining the navy. Meg's winter pains and loneliness threaten to destroy her bread-making business and break her spirit. But as the wild geese herald the onset of harsh weather, Anna, a mysterious, misshapen girl comes knocking at her door. Anna helps Meg through the long winter months and returns every year, disappearing only when the wild geese fly away.
