In another part of the world lives Meg, whose devoted son Jack has been tricked into joining the navy. Meg's winter pains and loneliness threaten to destroy her bread-making business and break her spirit. But as the wild geese herald the onset of harsh weather, Anna, a mysterious, misshapen girl comes knocking at her door. Anna helps Meg through the long winter months and returns every year, disappearing only when the wild geese fly away. Eventually Jack, too, returns home, and through Jack's love and Meg's wisdom, Anna's terrible enchantment is broken ...
