Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Glimpses of Real Life as Seen in the Theatrical World and in Bohemia: Being the Confessions of Peter Paterson, a Strolling Comedian

IN bygone times - in the days of Garrick, for instance, and even later - it was the strict rule to have a prologue to every play, and a preface to every book; but this prao tice is not now observed, especially in reference to plays - scarcely any of modern production having the old fashioned prologue and epilogue. To books, however, it l is still the custom to affix a preface, which, after all, is, in most instances, mere words; and these, if not full of sound and fury, usually signify nothing, or, at least, very, very little: but a prologue to the adventures and confes sions of so interesting a vagabond as a strolling player and Bohemian must not be allowed to degenerate into anything so commonplace.
