Publisher's Synopsis
"Ghazals & Ruba'iyat" by Alisher Navoiy is a selection of English translations of poems by the great fifteenth century Timurid poet. Navoiy introduced Persianate poetics to the old Turkic language Chagatai Türki and remains the greatest poet in that language. He is regarded as the founding father of Uzbek literature and is Uzbekistan's national poet. The translations are by the English poet Andrew Staniland, with the help of Uzbek translator Aidakhon Bumatova. Twelve of the ghazals were published in "12 Ghazals By Alisher Navoiy, 14 Poems By Abdulhamid Cho'lpon", but the translations have been completely rewritten for this edition. The translations of the other two ghazals, as well as all the ruba'iyat, are published for the first time. Most of them will be included in a forthcoming illustrated edition, with miniature paintings and calligraphy.
