El area en donde, segun el erudito agustino, tenian encerra das las Gesta los canònigos de Leon, no debia de ofrecer todas las seguridades apetecidas. Ilo se sabe quién, cuando ni còmo anocheciò cl còdice; pero si ocurriò que, en 1799-1800, cuando el jesuita Juan Francisco de Masdeu estuvo en Leon, no logro ver el deseado manuscrito, y, en el tomo xx de su Historia eri tiea a'e Esparìay de la cultura espaizo/a (madrid, no solo atribuyo la falta a que la copia de Risco no correspondia con el original (c') a que el codice no era tan antiguo como se a'ecia), sino que aprovecho la oportunidad para afirmar que las Gesta eran tan desautorizarias y tan fabulosas como todos los demas romances y cantares que han corrido sobre la misma materia.
