Publisher's Synopsis
The present volume covers a period from around 1580-1680 and concerns the life and work of around twenty artists whose oeuvre has so far only been treated sporadically in German-language specialist literature. Beginning with the late mannerist Palma il Giovane, to whom a particularly detailed chapter is dedicated, has followed since the beginning of the Seicento Padovanino and Saraceni - one rooted in Baroque classicism, the other influenced by Caravaggism. Furthermore, a group of artists (Fetti, Liss and Strozzi) who have been appointed to Venice from abroad and who gave the decisive impetus to the development of Venetian baroque painting will be discussed. The last chapter is devoted to a group of artists known as the Tenebrosi, the painters of darkness. The most prominent members of this group include Langetti, Zanchi and Loth, who were particularly open to the chiaroscuro painting of Caravaggism and the naturalism of the Spaniard Ribera.
