Publisher's Synopsis

The input of geomechanics principles to underground construction in rock relates to the preliminary and final designs and to monitoring for design modifications. This monograph provides a comprehensive description of the methodology for rock mass characterization. Emphasis is given to the principles of sampling and quantification of rock mass characteristics, especially the geometry of joints, and rock mass classification schemes. Methods of analysis of two-dimensional boundary value problems and design criteria are discussed. The concepts of safety factor and probability of failure are dealt with. Ground control procedures are discussed in reference to current practice, particularly in weak rock. This work will be of interest to civil and mining engineers.
