Excerpt from Geology of Southwestern Santa Barbara County, California: Point Arguello, Lompoc, Point Conception, Los Olivos, and Gaviota Quadrangles
The lowland area north of the river takes in the southern portion of the Santa Maria Basin, which within the area mapped comprises the Lompoc Valley, Santa Ynez Valley, Burton Mesa, Purisima Hills, and parts of Los Alamos Valley and San Rafael foothills. The stratigraphic section of this basin consists of marine Miocene and Pliocene and terres trial Pleistocene which becomes very thick along the Los Alamos synclinal trough. The Burton Mesa, Purisima Hills, and San Rafael foothills are anticlinal areas; the intervening valleys are synclinal.
The small portion of the San Rafael Mountains mapped is a block of Franciscan rocks thrust southwest toward the Santa Maria Basin.
