This volume reviews recent findings on the genetic epidemiology of mood disorders, describes methods used in genetic studies of these disorders, and explores the clinical implications of genetic research in psychiatry. Topics include diagnostic issues in pedigree assessment, basic principles of linkage analysis, genetic linkage studies in psychiatry, molecular genetic studies in affective disorders, the family psycho-educational approach, and the use of animal models and in vitro systems. Full consideration is given to genetic counselling issues in affective disorders, as well as to the effect of lithium on gene expression.
