Some of these imperfections have been mentioned as the work has progressed, to others no reference has been made. It might be said in extenuation of some at least of the defects of the work, that when it was projected the author had no knowledge ior means of knowing even the name of the father or of any other of the ancestors of Major Peirce, and that it was only after much labor and investigation, extending over a period of many years, that. A clue was found by which the mystery of the ancestry of Samuel Peirce could be unraveled.
