Publisher's Synopsis

Second edition of the catalogue Genatlas prepared from the data stored in GENATLAS data base and updated (January 1991). This book includes all the genes and other markers, such as fragile sites and anonymous D segments, mapped upon the chromosomes of man, representing altogether over 6,500 items and almost 9,400 pertinent references (4,400 and 5,400 in the first edition -- July 1989). Markers are first presented by name, with a specific list of clinical disorders (750 items) and by symbol. Lists have also been drawn up per chromosome and per category. In the list per chromosome, are included the anonymous D segments which are regionally assigned. Current linkage data for all markers are given as well as references per marker. Besides the clinical disorders upon which a special emphasis is placed, markers are also arranged by category such as antigens enzymes (with E.C. numbers) ; hormones and receptors, transporters and channels; transcription factors; other peptides and proteins; proto-oncongenes with their products; anti-oncongenes, virus-associated markers; complementing repair factors; identified DNA sequences and the mitochondria genome. An overview of the organisation of the genome is given with the recording and description of gene clusters, of families of genes and, finally, on "neighbourhood" maps around markers of (clinical) interest. Searching is made easier thanks to the use of synonyms. Thus, "Genatlas" is a useful and practical tool for mappers, biologists and physicians.
