'The earliest gold coins struck in Gaul were copies of staters issued in the name of Philip II of Macedon (359-336 BC) by Philip himself and his successors.' This detailed study is a corpus, die study and, in places, a re-classification of first generation Philippus imitation coins from across Gaul, and the series that succeeded them up to the beginning of the Gallic Wars. Sills examines the production and chronology of Celtic gold coins as they relate to historical and military events as well as their function and distribution. Placed within the context of finds from areas further east, from Italy, Sicily and Carthage, he asks how and why such coins arrived in Gaul.
