In the world system of today, rich people are deemed more successful than poor people, wealthy people are given more importance than poor people, those well off financially are considered more credible witnesses, and the rich and well-to-do are more sought after to serve on boards and commissions because they bring status, money, and are presumed to have more wisdom, knowledge, and understanding than others.
As much as things change, the more they seem to stay the same. Even today, success in our culture is calibrated largely in terms of possessions, number of degrees, big salaries, perks, and the insatiable accumulation of wealth. There is nothing wrong with ambition but we are often trained, programmed, and bombarded by our society to want more and to strive for more no matter what the cost.
In the world, some people will lie, cheat, or steal to gain more positions, possessions, and power. It seems as though everyone is trying to get ahead and make it to the top. Some people are even willing to sell their souls to the devil to acquire great gain or to be deemed number one, the best, the pick of the litter, the big dog, the cream of the crop, or the king of the hill. That's why in Mark 8:36 Jesus posed the question, what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your soul? (New Living Translation)
