Publisher's Synopsis
"Frontiers" is an integrated course in general English for young adult and adult students. It assumes an intermediate entry level, consolidating and building on this knowledge to provide systematic progress in key language skills. The course thus offers a firm foundation to any subsequent exam-related study, such as preparation for the Cambridge First Certificate in English. Within a multi-syllabus approach, special emphasis is placed on the following areas: grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening and phonology.;Activities are largely group-based, which allows for a lot of communicative spoken interaction. Writing skills are developed methodically. Project work is an integral part of the course. While linked to the main themes, the projects are seen as free-standing, and can be tailored to individual class circumstances. Projects stimulate learning and learner independence, and lead to more effective language development. The projects suggested in this work have been piloted by the author.;The course consists of eight modules, or extended teaching units, each providing between 12 and 15 hours of classswork. Each module starts with two pages of lead-in material that is usually highly pictoral in content. Every module contains at least two reading texts, an authentic listening section and a grammar section. There is a one-page summary at the end of each module, where students can assess their progress. An unusual reading maze is also concealed in the student's book. An optional practice book provides additional project work and exercise material. A range of reading and writing activities features vocabulary diagrams, crossword puzzles and games. An answer key is included. The teacher's book contains detailed guidance on teaching the modules, and includes useful suggestions on project and group work, a tapescript and answer key. A cassette accompanies the course.
