This text recounts the history of the Indonesian occupation of East Timor in 1975. Vast numbers of East Timorese lost their lives, as the Indonesians quelled resistance with brutal force.;In 1983, Belo was appointed apostolic administrator and began condemning Indonesian atrocities. He was ordained Bishop in 1988 and called on the UN Secretary General to intervene and allow a referendum on independence in 1989 following easing of the Indonesian restrictions on access to and from East Timor.
