Scout O'Malley was only minutes old when her mother died, and her entire life has been filled with guilt. Convinced she killed her mom, Scout has a hard time connecting with her dad - a nerdy professor who collects everything he can find - and she only has one friend: the sassy, hyper-focused Amaya. However, during the spring of her 7th grade year, Scout suddenly becomes obsessed with her classmate, Gilbert Estrella. As the school days pass, Scout finds herself thinking about Gil more and more and asking herself questions about the strange things she's been seeing lately. Why do dandelion seeds follow Gil around? Why does a strange man scream at Gil in the parking lot after school? And why can't she get Gil off her mind? When Scout is later paired with Gil in math class, she looks up to meet his eyes and is suddenly hit by a stream of memories that she has long forgotten, including one of a young Gil making a sandcastle appear out of thin air! When Scout finds out the truth about Gil, she is jerked into a whirlwind of friendship, betrayal, grief, and love as she fights to save the world, save her friend, and make up for the role of destruction that began the day she was born.
