Mary Antin immigrated to America from Czarist Russia when she was a child. She became a school teacher and wrote an autobiography called 'The Promised Land', which detailed anti-Jewish persecution in Russia and her experience as an immigrant in America. She fought for the rights of immigrants all her life, and published many books and essays to support this cause.
