This guide covers many topics, take the blinkers off and open your eyes to what makes a good FPL player. Many great players do not always translate into FPL points, but hopefully by the end of this book all will becomes clearer. I use examples from the season just passed (2022/2023), both good and bad, where it was a success and what brought regrets. Each year of playing adds to the knowledge through situations that have gone before, a lot is common sense, or at least it is once it is pointed out. Hopefully these pages add to your enjoyment, and whether it's your first season or not I hope it improves your rank.
Over the years I have improved my game, as much by taking it more seriously and including players from teams I don't like! In those early years I played it more as a football fan with all the prejudices that brings rather than considering the bigger picture and wanting to climb as high up the leagues as I could. My high point was the 2020/2021 season where pretty much every game was shown live here in the UK due to the Covid situation. The first few months were solid but not spectacular, I really liked the look of my side and I kept faith; in the second half of the campaign, it all dropped into place and I was green arrow after green arrow. Somehow every decision I made was gold, it was almost like I had a crystal ball! After the final match I was left inside the top 1,800 in the world... not bad considering that is out of eight million+ players. Last season I didn't hit such dizzy heights but a position in the top 37,000 was my third consecutive finish in the top !% of all players. The aim of this guide is to have you starting the season along the right path, and then navigate your way through situations that may arise on route. The reality is that with ten million+ playing the game each season the chances of winning the whole FPL is almost as unlikely as scooping the jackpot on the National Lottery. Yes, it would be unbelievable to take the title in what is a global competition but beating your workmates, friends and family is also pretty satisfying!
