Jules O'Brien and Michelle Davis have been best friends since third grade. Quiet and shy, Jules was thrilled to be pulled into the fold by popular Michelle and her wealthy Southern family. Now in their mid-twenties, they live worlds apart. When Jules agrees to be Michelle's maid of honour, she realises how different the two have become: Michelle is joining the Junior League and settling down in Alabama, while Jules is working her way up the publishing ladder in New York. Their passions and politics have diverged. When Jules discovers she's pregnant and decides to have an abortion - a decision Michelle vehemently opposes - their friendship reaches a breaking point.
