The action centres on the small rural town of Dillon, Texas, where the coveted state football championship rings are held in the highest regard. In 'Friday Night Lights' (2004) the Permian High Panthers hold the hopes of their economically-depressed town on their shoulders as they enter the 1988 American football season. Their dedicated coach, Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton), tries to keep the team focused and together in the face of the increasingly tense expectations of the town, but when they lose their star player it's all he can do to stop the team from falling apart completely.
