Publisher's Synopsis

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945) was the longest serving US President, in office continuously from his inauguration in March 1933 to his death from polio in April 1945. A Democrat, Roosevelt is credited with leading the United States through both the Great Depression of the 1930s and the Second World War. Roosevelt's 'New Deal' domestic program expanded the role of the federal government by seeking to create jobs and encourage economic growth, and as a policy narrative formed the basis of the 'New Deal Coalition' of voting blocs and interest groups who supported the Democratic Party through to the 1960s. Despite worsening ill health, Roosevelt remained President through the war years and cooperated with other Allied leaders to defeat Japanese and Nazi forces and lay the groundwork for a new post-war world order.
