Daughter of the philosopher William Godwin and the writer and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft. A few days after her birth her mother, who had written Vindication of Women Rights, died of a fever leaving her husband in the care of Mary and her three and a half year old sister Fanny Imlay. Married Godwin later with a widow who already had two daughters with whom the philosopher would light a new scion.
