Thomas has led a fairly uneventful life, that is until he attends his Confirmation retreat. While there he faces the first of many challenges by a dark force his new mentor and friend, Father Dominic, informs him is none other than the Devil himself. Though at first Thomas doubts such an invisible, evil entity exists, as his world begins to fall apart, he starts to believe otherwise. If not for the guidance and assistance he receives from Father Dominic, along with the discovery of a faith much deeper than he ever imagined, Thomas may well have been lost.
Eventually, he finds not only his faith, but a deep desire to enter the religious life. Coming home one Spring to help out at his church, he meets Theresa, a young woman who goes by the name of The Endlessly Dying Girl. Thomas discovers that not only does Theresa have special abilities, but he himself may have some as well. After the two meet, Thomas is visited by one of the Saints in a dream, who informs him of his quest. A quest to find twelve young people, like Theresa, who have all been gifted by the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, manefesting as superpowers. Together, the twelve will stand against the darkness and become the Guardians of Zion.
