Forty years is a long time to be in academia. On the eve of my sixty-fifth birthday, I ponder with my heart and soul for the encouragement and resolve to make definitive plans for my retirement. It took many long and hard years for me to reach this place and status in the academy. My work is very important to me. I have been blessed with opportunities to do things that I have tremendous interest in and enjoy immensely. It is a vital part of my professional life and identity. It is time to move on. My retirement, along with many other baby boomers, will open up opportunities to bring in new blood, young and diverse faculty members and administrators. That will be good for academia. This book will share highlights of my challenges and achievements in academia. I hope it will be insightful and inspirational to future academics.
