Amany tree species have been tried since plantings were first begun following the Timber Culture Act of 1873 (repealed in These early plantings were made, however, without much background of experience in how to prepare the land, what species of trees to use, and how to care for the plantings. Ias a result, many of them failed. Principal species used in the early plantings included boxelder, cottonwood, green ash, and various willows.
