Publisher's Synopsis
Since its inception in 1984 the Forest Industry Wastewaters symposium series has provided a forum for specialists from around the globe to exchange information on the treatment of forest industry wastewaters. The symposium has tracked remarkable progress in pulp and paper manufacture, in effluent controls, in environmental concerns, and in dramatic reductions in effluent quantities and pollutant loads, and dramatic increases in internal recycle of water. The 7th IWA Symposium featured sixty papers and posters and attracted authors from nineteen countries. Following full peer review twenty-seven high-quality papers were selected for this issue that represent a broad cross-section of research and practice addressing wastewaters in pulp and paper processing. Papers addressing current effluent treatment technologies are followed by ones developing innovative technologies for control of nutrients, colour and specific contaminants. A second major theme is treatment for water reuse, including new developments in biological treatment and in uses of membrane technology. There are also papers addressing development and use of analytical methods for contaminants and process control and for related topics, such as accumulation of metals in wood.
