Publisher's Synopsis

This volume is concerned with the utilization of foreign languages by adults, the need for it and the value placed upon it. The focus is on a particular goal of much language teaching, especially language for occupational use.;Contributors consider both foreign language competence as a primary skill and as a supplemental skill. Many occupations are considered and the often negative attitudes found towards foreign language learning examined. The deliberate steps taken by the Japanese to furnish their international executives with foreign language competence are contrasted with the ambivalent attitudes of American executives in Japan to the language of their host country. The somewhat more hopeful situation in Europe is also described.
