After an historical overview, this study places foreign investment in a number of contexts important to understanding its nature and its effect on the USA and the world. Amongst the topics covered are the sources and distribution of foreign direct investment, the consequences - simulated through an econometric model - of restricting foreign investment, the relationship between foreign investment in the USA and her foreign trade, commercial policy and exchange rate, and the economic arguments for and against increased foreign investment in the USA.
