Publisher's Synopsis

Young Jo Elliott lives in Tyneside, with her widowed father and older brother Colin. Jo develops a special friendship with Mark Duggan - Colin's best friend - who has unhappy home life. Mark is constantly being beaten up by his alcoholic father and is ignored by his hostile brother, Gordon, to whom he can never measure up. When Mark joins the merchant navy Jo is quickly seduced by Gordon and a secret affair ensues. Before long, however, Gordon dumps her. Mark returns on leave to find Jo recovering from a broken relationship with a man whose identity she will not reveal. Mark's tenderness begins to heal her and their childhood friendship flares into a deep passion. But then something comes to light that destroys Jo's relationship with Mark. Colin and Mark are called up to fight in the Falkland's War, leaving Jo uncertain as to whether she'll ever see them again. It's then that she realises that life is too precious to spend it without the man she truly loves - if it's not too late...
