Publisher's Synopsis
This is the story of my father, Manfred Gunther Reinhold Schmidt, who grew up in Nuestadt Am Rennsteig, in the small village of Thuringen, during the time when Russians took over East Germany in the 1940s. He writes about his childhood, surviving the war, his encounter with the Americans, his dangerous escape from communist rule, and his new life in America thanks to a Good Samaritan.
