Publisher's Synopsis
Climate change has long since occurred and is already clearly noticeable for everyone. Greening offers measurable, compensatory effects, especially in densely built-up urban areas: parks and gardens, greenery along the road, front gardens, green spaces and courtyards, green facades and green roofs are taking on a new role in our changing environment. As a brief Viennese history of the roof garden and the roof terrace, the book contributes to a better understanding of this special area of open space design. In a look back at the prototypes of roof gardens and roof terraces from antiquity to examples from the 20th century, the diverse varieties of rooms for staying high up in the open air are shown in words and images. These range from the "Hanging Gardens" of Queen Semiramis in ancient Babylon to numerous Viennese examples to the "Terrace Grove", which enabled the dissident Bogdan Bogdanovic (1922-2010) to stay outdoors in his Belgrade apartment despite years of house arrest often amazing and sometimes touching possibilities.
