Holidaying in Scotland, Lord Peter Wimsey examines the scene of a sudden death. The body of an artist lies in a burn amongst jagged rocks, at the bottom of a granite slope, an easel bearing a still-wet painting near the edge of the cliff above. It's assumed he must have stepped back to view his work, and accidentally plummeted to his doom. But there are too many suspicious elements, not least the medical evidence which contradicts eyewitness reports of when he was last seen alive. And there are six prime suspects - though five of them must be red herrings...
