After his wife, Emelia, passes away in a tragic car accident, Truman Gillmore is devastated - had they not been arguing moments before, she might never have gotten into that car. Now the guilt is weighing heavily on him and the only way to escape his past and move on with his life is to sell the home he and Emelia shared in Middlebourne, West Virginia and move to a small town in Ohio. Truman cannot, however, leave without first offering his precious Emmy an explanation in the form of a letter. Six months later, as he is settling into his new life as the owner and operater of a bait-and-tackle shop, Truman once again experiences the shock of his loss when he receives a response from Emelia. Finally coming to the conclusion that there could be no harm in answering her letter, he and his late wife embark upon a steady correspondence in which she urges him to let go of his guilt and focus on his new life. Truman knows, however, that in order to forgive himself he must first confess the details which led to Emelia's death. But as he slowly begins to make progress, new details emerge that suggest the fault may not lie with him after all. Emelia had a secret of her own - a secret that may have been the death of her. When her letters finally lead Truman to the truth of what actually transpired that fateful evening, he must make a decision. Does he have it in his heart to forgive yet again?
