In 1888, Leos Nemcova, forty-four: miner, blasting expert, sails to the New World in search of his dream. On the cold floor of a US customs depot, Leos' wife, Frederica, twenty-two, gives birth to a son. She abandons Leos and the baby to seek "Her New World." Frederica moves into the home of a wealthy sea captain and his wife, Megan. To enhance her position, Frederica seduces Megan. In 1880, Charles Winslow: railroad baron, rancher, industrialist, stakes out a vast kingdom on the wild Colorado/New Mexico border. He railroads in thousands of immigrants to mine his underground coal deposits: among them Leos Nemcova. The baby is discovered in the Slovak's carpetbag. The boy is taken from him and raised by Winslow. The lives of all intertwine in a web of love and violence.
