Johanna Mathilda and Carl August emigrated during the height of the Great Migration from Sweden to America in the 1880s. They were representative of the many young hardworking Swedish peasants who found themselves coming of age in a country mired in a troubled preindustrial agricultural economy. Their story almost got lost in the cobwebs of time, only to be reconstructed through extensive research conducted by their granddaughter and supplemented with oral family history. This is their story, told within the historical and cultural context of their times and with an attempt to breathe some life and feeling back into those cold hard facts.
