Publisher's Synopsis
This study offers an overview of the only federation on the African continent (recently joined by the new South African constitution which is also federal) and its expierence over three decades of independence. Nigeria has gone through various turbulent phases in its post-colonial history, but with the exception of a short spell in the late 1960's it remained a federation. In many respects federalism became one of the few unifying factors in a country divided into numerous ethnic groupings.
