Faust is a successful academic and scientist dissatisfied with his life, so he makes a pact with the Devil. In exchange for his soul, he desires unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. (A classic German tale, translated into English.) Faust is a play and an epic. Goethe classifies the first and second parts as tragedies, although the ending is happy. Most of Faust is written in verse, although some passages are in prose. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German writer of four novels; epic and lyric poetry; prose and verse dramas; and memoirs.
