Linseed oil continues as the major drying oil used in protective coatings, though its use has declined in recent years. In 1960 the 830 million pounds of drying oils consumed in all drying oil products were distributed as follows Linseed oil, 43 percent; soybean oil, 21 percent; castor oil, 11 percent; tall oil, 10 percent; fish oil, 6 percent; tung oil, 4 percent; and all other.
