Family follows a mother and daughter's struggle and fight for survival from one generation to the next. The saga begins with Clora, the matriarch, a woman born into slavery. Despair drives Clora to suicide, and the story is told by the voice of her spirit watching over a beloved daughter named Always. While Family is more Always story than her mother's, it is Clora's voice, disembodied and eternally weary that echoes in the reader's mind.
