Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Faith Justified by Progress, Vol. 9: Lectures Delivered Before Lake Forest College on the Foundation of the Late William Bross

IN this essay I make no attempt to give an adequate account of the course of social evolution or to trace in detail the development of the religious conscious ness. Least of all is it my purpose to take up the problem of origins, either as pertaining to social organization generally or with reference to religious belief in particular. Rather, my aim is to describe certain types of social life important enough to be regarded as leading stages in social or moral evolution, and to find out if possible the part played by religious faith in each one. The forms and features of human society to which reference is made are too well known to 'need illustration from sources, historical or ethnological; such citations would, in my judgment, only distract the attention of the reader.
