Since they were first published more than 150 years ago, the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen have been enjoyed by generations of children. The earliest editions were illustrated by Danish artists, especially Vilhelm Pedersen and Lorenz Forelich, but as the popularity of Andersen's work spread, many notable illustrators endeavoured to meet the challenge of depicting the often fantastic images he had created. This classic, illustrated edition features a selection of Andersen's best loved fairy tales, including such favourites as "The Ugly Duckling", "The Little Mermaid", "The Princess and the Pea", and "Thumbelina", all newly translated from the original Danish. These stories are accompanied by examples of some of the greatest illustrators of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including Mabel Lucie Attwell, John Hassall, Harry Clarke, and Maxwell Armfield as well as artists from the golden age of book illustration; Edmund Dulac, William Heath Robinson and Andersen's countryman Kay Neilsen.
