Publisher's Synopsis
These 22 essays, written since the 1970s, cover a range of themes and problems, and include studies of the leper-king myth at Angkor, post Angkorean normative poems, 19th-century perceptions of the moral order, and royally sponsored human sacrifices in the 1870s. Other essays deal with the colonial period and the revolutionary era (1975-1979). The collection also includes two unpublished essays: one on the shadows cast by Angkor onto the 1990s; the other takes up the problems of writing a biography of Pol Pot.
